In 2009, Fildebrandt was hired as the National Research Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. Fildebrandt published studies on MP and Senator pension,〔("Ex-MPs have hands out to collect fat pensions" ). By Daniel Proussalidis, ''Toronto Sun''.〕 federal government debt and federal balanced budget plans.
In 2012, Fildebrandt was promoted to the post of Alberta Director.〔("Calgary ‘overstepped’ its role when it spent $21,000 studying prostitution laws abroad, taxpayer federation says" ). ''National Post''.〕 In that role, Fildebrandt became a well known critic of Alberta Premier Alison Redford's fiscal policy in various venues,〔("CTF calls out Tory candidates over debt" ). ''Medicine Hat News''.〕 including a province-wide tour with a "Debt Clock".〔McTighe, Frank. ("Canadian Taxpayers Federation brings Alberta Debt Clock to Fort Macleod" ). ''Macleod Gazette''.〕〔("Liberals, Wildrose and Canadian Taxpayers Federation blast Alberta's 'unethical' $10-billion debt". ) By Shawn Logan, ''Calgary Sun'', July 14, 2014〕
In February 2013, Fildebrandt was refused access to the provincial budget lockup by Alberta Finance Minister Doug Horner despite the CTF being granted access for more than two decades. Fildebrandt campaigned to allow the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and other groups into the budget lockup, resulting in Premier Alison Redford overturning Horner's decision to disallow the CTF. Fildebrandt made headlines soon again when, on his way to give a post-budget speech, he encountered a 100 car traffic pileup and ended up hitch-hiking to the meeting.〔("100-car Alberta pile up couldn’t keep Fildebrandt from budget post-mortem: ). This caused controversy with Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who defended the payments.
During the Alberta PC leadership race, Fildebrandt filed Freedom of Information requests for Jim Prentice's federal expense records, releasing them in September 2014. This came after controversy about alleged irregularities in the destruction of the records.〔("Three thousand pages of Jim Prentice’s expense records released after earlier reports they were destroyed" ). ''National Post''.〕
In February 2014, Fildebrandt released the CTF's balanced budget plan calling for $2.4 billion in spending cuts to business subsidies and the bureaucracy. In May 2014 he spoke out about buyout payments to political appointees.〔("Canadian Taxpayers Federation probes pricey payouts" ). By Catherine Griwkowsky, ''Edmonton Sun''〕
Fildebrandt also took aim at the expense and accounting policies of several municipalities, regularly filing Freedom of Information requests for documents.〔("CTF calls Wood Buffalo “a joke of a government”" ). ''My McMurray'', Fort McMurray.〕
Fildebrandt is credited by the Calgary Sun with playing a significant role in the downfall of former Alberta Premier, Alison Redford and former Alberta Finance Minister, Doug Horner.〔Patrone, Marc. Fildebrandt's term as Alberta Director of the CTF ended in November 2014.〔〔("CTF Alberta director calls it quits" ). News Talk 770 (CHQR) November 07, 2014〕
